9/11 - 5 Years Later

Before moving to New York, I lived in Nashville, Tennessee. Nashvegas is a nutty southern town with even nuttier people, and I loved it. The following is a humorous story about how one news reporter in Nashville, Al Qaeda, and Poop came together to provide you with a little bit of humor on this otherwise somber day.

Post 9/11 Nashville was an interesting place to live. The local news reporters were busy spinning Nashville as the next major terrorist target, as if Osama himself denounced the Country Music Hall of Fame - calling Conway Twitty an infidel. Each night we heard reports of Muslim men videotaping the Nashville airport or mysterious people lurking around potential targets. We were living in strange times and our reporters were very strange people.

Do you remember when the Anthrax scare created news? In Nashville, one news reporter wanted to expose how vulnerable the city's drinking water was to this threat. However, anyone who has watched an episode of COPS filmed in Nashville knows there must be something already in the water.

Rob Manning from Nashville's News Channel 5 dove into the story with a Special Report on the lack of security at the city's water supply. Manning was set to blow the lid off the ability of some sly terrorist to sneak into the system and add Anthrax or Smallpox to our tap water! The undercover report showed how security was almost non-existent as Rob was able to sneak under a wire fence.

"It's not too hard to crawl underneath.... It took me less than 20 seconds."
This report failed to motivate the city of Nashville to secure the drinking water supply. You see, Rob Manning had actually broken into a metro sewage treatment plant.

In the end, a Metro Water Department spokesperson noted "if a terrorist tried to put something in our water supply, we'd rather he end up at the sewage plant."
