Airport Insecurity

Update: Airline workers at Liberty Airport arrested for smuggling cocaine
Update: Maryland man hangs out in Liberty Airport janitor closet

"The knife was in a cluttered handbag,"
- TSA spokesperson

A screener at Newark's Liberty International Airport was removed after a passenger with a 7 or 8 inch butcher knife in her purse was allowed to pass through security. She remembered the knife after being cleared and later told airport officials. The lady had stuffed the knife in her purse "just in case", prior to a blind date earlier in the week. No word if her blind date failed to detect it as well.

"The knife was in a cluttered handbag...It was characterized to me as difficult to detect" Transportation Security Administration spokeswoman Ann Davis told The Sunday Star-Ledger of Newark. That quote sends chills down my spine and should make people upset about the lack of security at an airport which was used by the 9/11 hijackers. We can only hope that a future terrorist carries tidy carry-on bags.

The screener was not fired, but will be retrained....
